Small Bites: January 26, 2015

Design is the main course here at Creative Plate, but sometimes, a big meal is a tough way to kick off a Monday, so nibble on these small bites to start. Here are some links I found this past week that I wanted to pass on to you.

Boulder-based agency, Grenadier, launched their new website this week. They’re small firm in Boulder who have grown to a full-time staff of 17 people, survived the big floods last year and are now looking for new space to expand. I really like their work, and I’m always going to give shout outs to Colorado companies doing well. Grenadier’s clients include Adidas, Sunny D, Quizno’s and Purina.

Hoefler & Co. (formally Hoefler & Frere-Jones) released their new typeface, Obsidian, this week. It’s a gorgeous display face that pairs well with H&Co’s other clean fonts. Definitely has a throwback Great Gatsby-like feel and is absolutely stunning.

Starbucks released a print ad in The New York Times last week honoring Martin Luther King. During this current time of racial tension, it was a beautifully done ad that reminds us how much further we need to go for equal human rights.

We graphic designers can be a rather finicky bunch to the non-designers around us. We buy things strictly for the packaging, judge restaurant menus by their font choices and overall look at the world just a little bit differently. Java of the Week

We designers are fueled by massive amounts of coffee. This week, I just got in a shipment of the Honey Badger Espresso from Intelligentsia’s Coffee line of Black Cat Espresso. It’s a limited edition coffee made with beans from Kenya, Ethiopia and Colombia. It’s a bit syrupy, but I really like the flavor, and it’s quite smooth.
